[edit] Wii USB Devices Compatibility List
Anyone is free to edit this list though you must create an account first. Vandals will be banned and their IP blocked from further edits.
[edit] PLEASE READ ME (Guidelines)
1. If you are the first person to add a Device, then the confirmed column should read 0 (as it is unconfirmed). Every person should then add 1 to that when they have verified that outcome.
2. Keep it to English! Most people at GBATemp have decent English, if you can't say something in English, then write it down in whatever language you speak and hopefully someone will translate it for you.
3. Try to fill out as much as you can.
4. Hugely important would be adding a link to the drive and where you bought it. Naming has been a little vague, lets be precise. Drives can differ from batch to batch. If the shop you purchased it from can't be found online, please find the manufacturers web page for that EXACT drive version.
5. If you are running the game using a card reader (SD, Memory Stick, CF, etc), list the READER, NOT THE CARD; USB cardreaders are bridge-like in that any card will work with a working reader. Similarly, if using an enclosure that wasn't sold at retail with your hard drive already in it, list the ENCLOSURE, NOT the drive itself.
[edit] How to test
Finding your device's USB ID:
Every USB device ever made has its own unique Vendor ID and Product ID, two four-digit hexadecimal numbers that together identify a particular model made by a particular company. If you have a device's Vendor ID and Product ID you can say with confidence whether any two given USB devices are the same model or not.
Windows:
Plug the device into your computer. Wait for Windows to initialize the device, if necessary. Open Device Manager, open the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" group, right click on "USB Mass Storage Device", select the "Details" tab, then select "Hardware Ids" from the Property drop-down box. In the big box beneath that there will be one or more lines starting with something like this:
USB\VEN_05E3&DEV_0715
In this case, the Vendor ID is 05E3 and the Product ID is 0715.
If there is more than one "USB Mass Storage Device" listed, unplug any USB device plugged into the system, or failing that, try a different computer. Some computers have built-in cardreaders attached to the USB bus, which can confuse the process.
Linux:
Plug the device into your computer, wait about 8 seconds (to be safe), then:
$ less /proc/bus/usb/devices
For every USB device in your system (including your root hubs!) there is an entry in this pseudo-file that looks something like this: (the Vendor ID and Product ID are in bold)
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=04 Cnt=01 Dev#= 15 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=05e3 ProdID=0715 Rev=94.07
S: Manufacturer=Genesys
S: Product=USB Reader
S: SerialNumber=000000009407
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=500mA
I:* If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms
Note "Driver=usb-storage". This tells you the device is claimed by the usb-storage driver, and is therefore a USB storage device. Obviously, if usb-storage isn't loaded that won't be there; make sure it's loaded!
If there is more than one such block listed, again, unplug other devices from the system, or failing that, try a different computer. Note that you will have to close and re-open the file to see any changes.
Another way to do this in linux:
$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0951:1603 Kingston Technology Data Traveler 1GB/2GB Pen Drive
The first number is Vendor ID and the second Product ID
Mac:
Insert the USB device into your Mac. Wait about 8-10 seconds, to make sure it's detected, and start System Profiler. On the left hand column, under the Hardware heading, find USB. On the top right pane, find and click on the device you are checking (check under the names USB Reader, Mass Storage Device, Generic Storage, Volume, etc.), and more information should appear to the bottom of this pane (now the bottom right). In this area, search for the following information:
USB Reader:
Capacity: 1.88 GB
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
BSD Name: disk3
Product ID: 0x0715
Vendor ID: 0x05e3 (Genesys Logic, Inc.)
Version: 94.07
Serial Number: 000000009407
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
GeeXboX:
1. Check if Device is formated as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS
2. Make a Backup. There's a very small Chance that the Stick will get corrupted.
3. Load GeeXboX
4. Plug your Device in
5. See if it shows directories.
Non-Linux based Homebrew:
1. Grab your USB-Device
2. Check if it's formated as FAT/FAT32, Windows XP doesn't let you format big drives (AFIAK over 40GB) as FAT32, you need to use FAT32Format or a Linux live CD/DVD or a GParted Live CD/DVD.
3. Make a Backup. There's a very small Chance that the Stick will get corrupted.
4. Go to HBC, plug your Device in.
5. Load USB mass storage device tester
USB Loader
1. Create a WBFS partition on the device, and load a game that is [USB Loader v1.x Game Compatibility|known to work]] onto the device.
2. Connect the device before turning your Wii on, to be safe. Enable any relevant "Disk mode", "USB storage mode" etc. beforehand.
3. Boot the game you recorded earlier.
4. Play the game for at least one hour before reporting back. Many devices appear to work at first, but have crippling stability issues.
If Problems occur:
1. Try to plug the Device at the other USB-Port.
2. Try to plug the Device in before entering/in Homebrewchannel. Then load App.
3.Try to plug in the Device and then power on Wii.
If the Device does not work
1. Try to find a spare Device that will show up.
2. Use this to boot the loader.
3. Once you have the "No partition found" screen, switch to the original Device.
4. Press A. Hopefully, the device will show up on the screen to be formatted.
5. If it works, on following loads, you will still need to swap. Instead of formatting every time, press A, then B to go back.
If the Device automatically spins down due to inactivity
Some drives are configured from the factory to automatically spindown after a set number of minutes of inactivity, which could cause issues. Configuration software is usually available to configure such devices to disable this feature.
| Compatibility Legend

| Not recognized by USB Loader. USB Loader shows very slow countdown when connected, but won't see the drive or its WBFS partition. This is probably because the HDD case also has an integrated SD-card reader so USB Loader might not chose the right device from the five or six USB mass storage devices that there are. | The USB-Drive works good under Vista, games can be put onto the harddrive using WBFS without problems about 152 games fit on the drive, however USB-Loader v1.1 does not recognize the USB-Drive (tryed as NTFS and as Fat32), after testing i found out that if i open the USB-Drive casing, take the harddrive out and then connect the hardrive to the wii using a simple 3rd party IDE-to-USB converter USB-Loader v1.1 does recognize the USB-Drive and games are selectable and playable. I guess the USB-Loader v1.1 is not compatible with the chipset of Maxtors IDE-to-USB converter. Follow the link for a picture of the Maxtor working with a 3rd party IDE-to-USB converter, [digital8] http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2666/dsc03243b.jpg. EDIT1.: Homebrew does work on the Maxtor One Toutch, no need for the 3rd party IDE-2-USB converter there. EDIT2.: Tested with USB-Loader v1.1 till v1.5. EDIT3.: With Waninkoko's cIOS38Rev12 the drive does work as long as you first boot the USB Loader (Till the No USB Drive found message) and then power up the USB Drive (Un\Replugging the USB cable has no effect). Everytime you exit from the USB Loader you have to repeat the procedure.

However, it seems to fail on Waninkoko's cIOS36 revs higher than 9. This might, however, be because of other reasons. -Speedy~

| USB loader recognizes the drive occasionally.Might be fixed on the next version of USB Loader. Edit: Works with this setup:1st partition Fat32 40GB, 2nd partition NTFS 385GB, 3rd partition WBFS 40GB. Plug a usb flash drive into the first usb and plug hdd into second usb to make it detect instantly. EDIT AGAIN: Does not work with the suggested setup. Completely non-working on all loaders and with all cIOS revisions. EDIT: Confirmed doesn't work. EDIT: Works when using Hermes' cIOS 222/223, but not with Waninkoko's cIOS 249

| Has trouble booting up with USBloader GX, just make sure to turn on the external first, and wait 10-15 secs before turning on the Wii. Fails 1 out of 5 times. This is due to the multiple ports most likely. However, this drive does have a very fast transfer speed during PC transfers because of the other fast ports. It's worth the buy regardless, and it's very quiet and efficient.
