== Current History ==
For a brief period of time, The Catboy left GBAtemp in the hopes of finding himself. During this leap of absence he began a self-discovery journey that brought him to realize that he was actually a she all along. During those months away from GBAtemp she started discovering the details about herself that she hid away for far too long. It was during this time that she started meeting new people, started her job at WalMart as a cashier, and started studying philosophy again.
It was also during this period of time Crystal put an end to The Catboy fursona line and created Crystal the Glaceon as a Pokesona and more recently Priestess Mia a white tiger fursona. As well came back to GBAtemp under the new screen name Crystal The Glaceon.

== Old history ==
The Catboy is a persona created by Nolan. The name is based on a failed never been released web comic called "PWN'D" which would feature the characters Nekonolan and Chibi Chris as they went on an epic adventure through this new world that just appeared one day in the middle of their town. Due to complications with the artist and school the comic never got much further than one comic strip that has been lost for many years now.
The name nekonolan was later changed to "The Gay Boy Bunny" or just "Bunny" for another failed web comic called "The Adventures of Sleeve Man and The Gay Boy Bunny." This comic never got farther than the name before it was dropped for lack of an artist.
From there the name was later merged with Nekonolan and became "A Gay Little Catboy," this later becoming a common screen name for The Catboy.

== Discovering GBATemp ==
Around late June of her Sophomore year in High school, she bought a Games n Music from her local WalMart. Not knowing much about it, she did a Google search to find out it was called a "Flashcard" and that flashcards commonly play NDS roms. Knowing less about, she started searching to see if the Game n Music could do the same. Crystal found a [http://gbatemp.net/topic/87662-games-n-music/ thread on GBAtemp] that both disappointed and interested her at the same time. She started searching through this new found site trying to find out as much information as she can before she went out and bought a new flashcard that could play NDS Roms, which had turned out to be her M3 Real.

== Joining GBATemp ==
Crystal spent close to a year just being a guest on the site and collecting updates for the M3 Real. Then on September 12, 2009, 3 games were dumped. The release of Pokemon SoulSilver, HeartGold, and Mario & Luigi : Bowser's Inside Story all on the same day. GBATemp was flooded bad enough that they shut down the site to all guests. So on that day, Crystal the Glaceon joined GBATemp.

== The rise of Crystal the Glaceon ==
Crystal joined mostly to be a demanding pokenoob who only wanted updates and to post when an update wasn't being made fast enough. From there she was planning on just coming on every so often to see how things were going with updates. After a few weeks of being a pokenoob she started to like being part of the comunity and started enjoying the forums more and more every day. As her enjoyment for the site grew, so did her willingness to help the site. She started small by making a few tutorials and posting what little knowledge she had about flashcards. After a few months of being active he had enough information tools to create a new thread for the "M3 Tri-Boot" (now know as the M3 Quad-Boot.) This thread getting mixed results, but ultimately became the major reason Crystal stayed active. From there Crystal began branching out and posting in other sections and even ended up win a contest which resulted in her getting a Supercard DSOnei. Which from that card she has since bought an R4, Acekard 2i, Supercard DSTwo, and an R4i Gold. Which has allowed her to be active in more sections of the site.

== Time away from GBATemp ==
On September 24th, 2011, Crystal and her boyfriend Michael moved from Massachusetts to Indiana and had to move in with Michael's mom. Sadly Michael's mom didn't have internet nor did she want to pay for it because she didn't use it. This made it very hard for them to find jobs or really even look for a new place to live. This also meant that Crystal the Glaceon was no longer going to be able to get on GBATemp.
The good part about this was for several long periods of time she was able to spend time with Michael and her friends. As well had time to do some real soul searching to see what was a real value in her life. She began researching religion and politics, trying to get a full understanding of them. The rest of her time was occupied with video games.

== Returning to GBATemp and new Administrator of FileTrip ==
On January 30th 2012, Crystal received a private message from Costello asking if she could talk to him. On February 8th 2012, Costello gave her a job offer to work for FileTrip after finding out the trouble she was having after her move. Obviously in need of a job, she took the job. On March 3rd, she applied to get their internet turned on. On March 10th, Crystal the Glaceon officially had Comcast cable Internet and took her spot as an Admin of FileTrip.

== Crystal the Glaceon now ==
Although attempting to be more active on GBAtemp, she doesn't own any current flashcard, thus can't help in those departments. She is now one of the acting admins of Truly Satanic and Sanctum of the Black Sun. She spends most of her time working in Electronics at her local WalMart. She is currently working on Android ROMs and attempting to make her own operating system.

yaosm (Yet-another-open-source-modchip), is an open-source PIC based modchip.

It supports all the features that the commercial modchips have. The code is written in [http://gcbasic.sf.net Great Cow basic] and the code is optimized for speed, size and stability. The chip keeps its configuration in the eeprom part of the chip and it can be altered with the configuration disc. It's the only Open Source chip so far that has released the source for the configuration disc.

'''GBAtemp.net''' is the main site of the [[GBAtemp Network]]. It was created in the year 2002, when it started as a simple ROM hosting site (see history below).

Nowdays, GBAtemp has become a real community, mostly known for it's support for NDS/GBA flashcarts and console hacking. The site has a strong focus on Nintendo consoles, but does support consoles from other brands as well. The site no longer hosts any ROMs, and links to them or other warez are no longer allowed.

The site is lead by the 2 Admins [[Costello]] and [[shaunj66]]. Together with the other [[Current Staff members|staff members]], they try to keep the site up and running!

==History==
===Early years===
[[File:Gbatemp2ya.png|thumb|The initial look of GBAtemp]]GBAtemp began as a small GBA ROM site in 2002, created by its original admin, an Italian guy going by the name [[KiVan]]. KiVan was a GBA scene freak, always behind the latest ROM releases. He was both for playing them—first on emulator, then on 'real hardware' (aka flash carts)—and for sharing them with others.

Motivated by his passion for the GBA games and by the relative difficulty of getting the ROMs on IRC channels soon after the release, he came up with the idea to host some of the latest ROMs himself, to help out close and far friends that shared his same passion: the GBA. So he started to keep a constantly up-to-date web page, where he provided always-working links to the latest 10 GBA ROMs. A very simple and straightforward page: just some text, images, and of course links to the ROMs. That page got the name GBAtemp, mostly because it was a GBA ROMs page, but always TEMP(orarily).

He started to become well-known in the scene because he was blazingly fast in updating the web page: split-seconds after the ROM was released, KiVan uploaded it on the hosting web space and updated the page with the links. He also prided himself on never having broken links, by working VERY VERY hard to update old dead links with new links as soon as he noticed them down... and that was REALLY fast since he was a real 'F5' refresh maniac. The page was updated almost every hour, or sometimes even more frequently. KiVan also had to switch hosting nearly everyday, and used a free dynamic DNS service in order to automatically give people the link to the latest, constantly changing, working web space. Back at the time, people knew that if you wanted to check the last ROM released or if you needed a hand to get just released GBA ROM, GBAtemp was the place to be.

Keeping up with the ever flowing releases and the web hosting shutdowns was no easy feat, but KiVan was well prepared for the task. He had tons of different 'free' webspaces registered to always different fake names: he kept registering new spaces every day with fake names and IDs, and he kept this 'pool' of free hosting web spaces so as soon as the web page or one of the ROMs went down, mostly because the hosting company finally noticed KiVan playing bad tricks with THEIR web space, he could easily and quickly replace the link with a new one.

KiVan was, at the time, a university student in computer science at the 'Università degli Studi di Milano' in Milan (Italy). From the university computers room he administered GBAtemp and played every single GBA release as soon as they came out along with several friends: Omero, Alexander, Zel and Garet. They all had GBAs and flash cards and so non-stop multiplayer and single player 10 hours per day was pretty much the 'usual everyday stuff' for them. Then things started to change: the GBAtemp name spread quickly, and two of KiVan's close friends ([[Omero]] and [[Alexander]]) joined him to help out with GBAtemp, and so they started to add 'features' to that tiny page: first a guest book, which "sucked big time", but was used as a sort of make-shift message/relay board, then the chance for users to give feedback to the ROMs, then some news, etc...

At some point, they came up with the idea of making it a full-fletched forum, a community. Here came M4D (an Italian gaming services portal), which helped a lot by providing GBAtemp a server to be for quite a long time, giving bandwidth and server all for free. This was the chance for the guys to make GBAtemp into something big for real.

On 24 October 2002, the Invision Power Board forums and portal were officially opened, hosted by M4D server. Omero and Alexander helped KiVan install and manage the board. The site boasted an impressive [[portal|portal page]], which was an original design and quite different from normal IPB portals. This led to many other sites cloning the portal layout. Despite the Italian origins, English was picked as the language of choice, because KiVan, Omero and Alexander wanted GBAtemp to be the #1 GBA Scene Community on the web, and English was deemed to be the most widespread and well-known language. Because of this, the forums quickly grew in size and the new GBAtemp attracted a lot of attention.

===Going legal===
A few weeks after the launch of the main forums, on November 5, 2002<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20021127050701/http://gbatemp.m4d.sm:80/ GBAtemp forum thread #1225] (archive, original thread only accessible to staff)</ref>, the staff had to come to the decision that ROMs would no longer be available to download from GBAtemp, and all warez and other illegal material would be ruled out on the forum. The reason this was done is because a lot of members and the staff themselves had really come to appreciate the forums and each other, and didn't want to risk losing the community they had built up. So to avoid legal issues and to make sure GBAtemp was never shut down, all ROMs, ROM links, warez and more were now strictly forbidden on the 'new GBAtemp'. The URL "gbatemp.net" was registered a few months later<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/5-january-2003.4663/ 5 January 2003]</ref>, but served only as a redirect to the existing url "gbatemp.m4d.sm".

Shortly after the rule changes, a few smaller sites were made by contributors of the main site: [[GBASaves.info|GBASaves.info and PSPSaves.info]], which hosted save files for GBA and PSP; and RLS monkey, a site which automatically scraped various sources to create an up-to-date list of scene releases. Due to some small legal issues and general disinterest in these sites, their admins eventually stopped maintaining them, and they are no longer available.

===A major site change===

Officially dubbed GBAtemp V2, the site was improved in many ways. The site officially started using http://gbatemp.net as the main web domain from this date.

The most notable change was the upgrade of the forums. Thanks to donations from the various staff members, enough money was raised to buy an Invision Power Board License, which was used to install IPB2.0.2, and later 2.0.3. Along with the new forum came a brand new skin, as well as a revamped portal. Other changes include the addition of new forums, the creation of the [[G-Online]], and some changes to the Staff.

Another improvement was the Reviews section, which would later turn out to be one of the biggest features of the site. Regular members were also allowed to post their reviews in a special section. The best reviews were regularly featured on the site's front page.

On 11 June 2006, a new skin called ''GBAtemp Lite'' was added to the site<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatempnet-changes.33210/ GBAtemp.net Changes]</ref>. The site also moved to a new and better host, resulting for the first time in a dedicated server. This greatly improved page loading speeds and overall stability of the site itself.

A few months later, on November 2006, the portal received another update<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/new-portal-on-gbatemp.39403/ New Portal on GBAtemp]</ref>. Thanks to newer technologies, the portal could now be customized by members in order to display only the news that was interesting to them. The page was now loaded through AJAX, so that news items could be changed without having to reload the entire page.

Over time, the site began running slower, resulting in a big part of the older posts and topics to be archived<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/misc-gbatemp-news.43663/ Misc GBAtemp News]</ref>. This archiving would later be undone, making all posts available from the main site once again.

===Updating yet again===
The site started growing more popular, and more visitors were lured to the website. In the mean time, progress was made on the hacking of various consoles, gaining the site the interest of many users.

GBAtemp got it's second major update on 27 February 2007<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/we-love-gbatemp-v3.45463/ We Love GBAtemp V3!]</ref>. This new site was now called GBAtemp V3, and brought another set of great additions and improvements. A new skin was introduced under the same name, containing a brand new layout and an improved mascot design. The older skins remained available for the members who wished to keep using them. The forums were updated to IPB version 2.3.5, the latest release at the time.

Along with the update to the forums, the site introduced its own wiki, called [[WikiTemp]]. The wiki was meant to be used for articles about GBAtemp itself, but also about its various related subjects, like Nintendo DS flashcarts and console homebrew. Various other changes were also made on the site, like an improved G-Online, which now included integration with the portal.

Only a few days after the update, the site moved to yet another webhost<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/if-you-can-read-this-then.45628/ If you can read this, then...]</ref>. At this time the site contained around 500 active members on average.

This allowed the members of the site to upload various homebrew and other useful tools directly to the site, but no ROMs or other illegal file. The feature turned out to be a big success, as it gained over 500 files in only a few days<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/threads/500-files-in-the-download-center.51541/ 500 Files in the GBAtemp download center]</ref>.

Various other projects were started, including a podcast (named Tempcast)<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/tempcast-the-gbatemp-podcast.61367/ Tempcast - The GBAtemp Podcast]</ref>, a real Releases Management Center<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-releases-management-center.63507/ GBAtemp Releases Management Center]</ref>, and an online web store for GBAtemp related merchandise<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-the-official-shop.63552/ GBAtemp: the official shop]</ref>.

The site had now reached 5 years of existence, and had gained over 100,000 members and nearly 850,000 posts<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-forums-5th-anniversary.63443/ GBAtemp forums 5th anniversary]</ref>. But the site kept on growing faster than ever before!

===Expanding the network===
On 20 October 2009, GBAtemp launched a new sister site under the name [[FileTrip.net]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-network-launches-new-website-filetrip.186682/ GBAtemp Network launches new website FileTrip.net]</ref>. This resulted in the creation of the GBAtemp Network.

FileTrip was a big improvement over the old GBAtemp download center. Not only did it have a better and cleaner layout, it also gave users more control over their files. All old files from the GBAtemp download center (a little over 7000) were imported to the new website. Members who had already uploaded files to the old download center could regain access to their files by linking their GBAtemp account to FileTrip.

A few months later, the Network was further expanded through the addition of [[ShopTemp.com]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-presents-shoptemp.219371/ GBAtemp presents: ShopTemp]</ref>. To the surprise of most GBAtemp members, this online store was not a replacement for the GBAtemp merch, but an entirely new website. The site sold mostly homebrew related products, including NDS Flashcarts and Wii Modchips. The store quickly became known for it's incredibly low prices.

On 30 October 2010, a new feature was added to the main site called [[Ask GBAtemp!]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/ask-gbatemp.262637/ Ask GBAtemp!]</ref>. The feature allowed members to ask and answer questions in a more simplified Q&A format, without distractions from all of the forums extended features. While this is technically not a separate site of the network, it was considered one of the bigger features that were available.

In December 2010, bad luck had fallen upon the GBAtemp Network. ShopTemp.com grew too popular for it's own good, and was eventually ordered to stop selling NDS Flashcarts and Modchips. Due to this being the most popular items in the shop, the site was shut down entirely<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/shoptemp-v1-rip.268719/ ShopTemp (V1) R.I.P.]</ref>.

A few months later, it was revealed that ShopTemp was far from gone. The site was relaunched on 8 February 2011 under a new name (ShopTemp.net), and with a different goal<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-presents-shoptempnet.278327/ GBAtemp presents ShopTemp.net]</ref>. Unlike the last version of the site, ShopTemp was no longer selling actual items by itself. Instead, the site was used as a price comparator for other webshops. The new website would be integrated with GBAtemp.net (sharing the same user database), allowing GBAtemp members to sell their items on ShopTemp.

===The update that couldn't be===
On 8 October 2011, the next big step forward was made on the main site<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/welcome-to-gbatemp-v3.310728/ Welcome to GBAtemp V3+]</ref>. The forums were updated to the latest Invision Power Board version 3.2, making it the biggest update so far. Due to this, more features than ever before could be found on the site. All of the old modules and addons for the site were completely rewritten to support the new forum software. Some of the more basic features were instead replaced with official Invision Power Board addons, like the blogs and pictures modules. Since the main skin of the site was not a brand new skin, but rather a reworked version of the V3 skin; the update was dubbed as "V3+".

Shortly after the update was launched, a second server was added to support the new increased load of the software, as well as the ever larger growing traffic. By this time, the site had several thousands of users online at all time.

===Unhappy anniversary===
On October 22, 2012, which marked the 10th anniversary of the site, the main GBAtemp website was taken down by an unknown hacker group, which had managed to gain control of the site's backend server. As a result of this hack, the drastic decision was made to get rid of all the current code, and to rebuild the entire code base of the site from the ground up. This meant that the site remained down for a whole week, while the administrators converted the site to a new forum software: XenForo. The site was relaunched as V4 on October 29, 2012<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-v4-powered-by-xenforo.336512/ GBAtemp v4: powered by XenForo]</ref>, with a lot of its previous features missing, but also some new features that were provided by various addons of XenForo.

The staff kept working on the site in the background; and after a while the old review center<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-review-center-is-back.352554/ GBAtemp Review Center is back]</ref> and blogs<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/entry/new-blogs.10059/ New Blogs]</ref> were ported over to the new platform. Some other new features were also added, such as thread access lists; which allow multiple members to edit the first post of a thread. The former release list (G-Online) was instead replaced by a partner site, NFOrush (which has since stopped).

===Back in business===
Since the launch of the new review center, which got a silent update a few months after its launch, the site has tried to evolve in a more legitimate and reputable site for gaming news and reviews. The staff has made various connections to game publishers and producers to acquire review codes for games and gaming accessories. The site was also added to the gaming review aggregating site [https://opencritic.com/outlet/306/gbatemp OpenCritic]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-features-on-opencritic.400116/ GBAtemp Features on Opencritic]</ref>.

News articles that are posted to the new home page have also received an improved, more professional layout. In 2015, this led to a GBAtemp staff member to officially attend the E3 conference of that year<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-net-attending-e3-2015.384392/ GBAtemp.net Attending E3 2015!]</ref>; which was a first for the site.

On May 30, 2015, the first big update to the XenForo-based site was launched<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-v5-is-online.389794/ GBAtemp V5 is online!]</ref>. Now known as V5, most of the old features that the site possessed before the hack had been restored. The forums were updated to the latest XenForo version, a brand new custom built home page was added, Ask GBAtemp was restored, and the entire site got a new fresh coat of paint, with a fully responsive skin.

On May 30, 2015, the latest version of the portal was released alongside GBAtemp V5<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-v5-is-online.389794/ GBAtemp V5 is online!]</ref>. This portal was once more a custom-built page by the site. It features a more modular design, with various blocks of content are shown in a grid layout. The portal was designed to be fully dynamic, and as such blocks can be added, removed or rearranged by members to fit their needs. Some of the individual blocks, like the news block, allow for additional customization. One of the other design goals of the page was to improve the general performance. In order to achieve this, the portal uses multiple layers of caching, and can cache individual blocks independently of each other.

Motivated by his passion for the GBA games and by the relative difficulty of getting the ROMs on IRC channels soon after the release, he came up with the idea to host some of the latest ROMs himself, to help out close and far friends that shared his same passion: the GBA. So he started to keep a constantly up-to-date web page, where he provided always-working links to the LATEST 10 GBA ROMs. A very simple and straightforward page: just some text & images, and links to the ROMs of course .

He started to become well-known in the scene because he was blazingly fast in updating the web page (split-seconds after the ROM was released, KiVan uploaded it on the hosting web space and updated the page with the links), and he almost never had any broken links (well he had them, but he worked VERY VERY hard to update old dead links with new links as soon as he noticed them down... and that was REAL fast since he was a real 'F5' refresh maniac).

That page was called GBAtemp, mostly because it was a GBA ROMs page, but always TEMP(orary), since KiVan had to switch hosting nearly everyday, and KiVan worked hard for it: by updating every hour or less the page with the newest ROMs & by always keeping the web page & the ROMs online, using a free dynamic DNS service in order to automatically give people the link to the latest, constantly changing, working web space.

Back at the time, people knew that if you wanted to check the last ROM released or if you needed a hand to get just released GBA ROM, GBAtemp was the place to be.

Keeping up with the ever flowing releases and the web hosting shutdowns was no easy feat, but KiVan was well prepared for the task. He had tons of different 'free' webspaces registered to always different fake names: he kept registering new spaces every day with fake names and IDs, and he kept this 'pool' of free hosting web spaces so as soon as the web page or one of the ROMs went down (mostly because the hosting company finally noticed KiVan playing bad tricks with THEIR web space), he could easily and quickly replace the link with a new one.

KiVan was at the time, a university student in computer science at the 'Università degli Studi di Milano' in Milan (Italy), and from the university computers room he administered GBAtemp and played every single GBA release as soon as they came out along with several friends: Omero, Alexander, Zel and Garet. They all had GBAs and flash cards and so non-stop multiplayer and single player 10 hours per day was pretty much the 'usual everyday stuff' for them.

Then things started to change: the GBAtemp name spread quickly, and two of KiVan's close friends (Omero and Alexander) joined him to help out with GBAtemp, and so they started to add 'features' to that tiny page: first a guest book (it sucked big time, but it was used as a sort of make-shift message/relay board), then the chance for users to give feedback to the ROMs, then some news, etc...

On 24 October 2002, the Invision Power Board forums and portal were officially opened, hosted by M4D server. [[Omero]] and [[Alexander]] helped [[KiVan]] installed and managed the board. The site boasted an impressive portal, it was an original design and quite different from normal IPB portals, this led to many other sites cloning the portal layout. Despite the Italian origins, English was picked as the language of choice, because KiVan, Omero and Alexander wanted GBAtemp to be the #1 GBA Scene Community on the web, and English is by far the most widespread and well-known language, so it was the only 'right' choice for that, simple enough. Also because of this, the forums quickly grew in size and the new GBAtemp attracted a lot of attention.

===Going legal===

The reason this was done is because a lot of members and the staff themselves had really come to appreciate the forums and each other, and didn't want to risk losing the community they had built up. So to avoid legal issues and to make sure GBAtemp was never shut down, all ROMs, ROM links, warez and more were now strictly forbidden on the 'new GBAtemp'. The URL "gbatemp.net" was registered a few months later<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/5-january-2003.4663/ 5 January 2003]</ref>, but served only as a redirect to the existing url "gbatemp.m4d.sm".

Shortly after the rule changes, a few smaller sites were made by the owners of the main site: [[GBASaves.info|GBASaves.info and PSPSaves.info]], which hosted save files for GBA and PSP; and RLS monkey, a site which automatically scraped various sources to create an up-to-date list of scene releases. The most notable change was the upgrade of the forums. Thanks to donations from the various staff members, enough money was raised to buy an Invision Power Board License, which was used to install IPB2.0.2, and later 2.0.3. Along with the new forum came a brand new skin, as well as a revamped portal. Other changes include the addition of new forums, the creation of the [[G-Online]], and some changes to the Staff.

Another improvement was the Reviews section, which would later turn out to be one of the biggest features of the site. Regular members were also allowed to post their reviews in a special section. The best reviews were regularly featured on the site's front page.

The site also moved to a new and better host, resulting for the first time in a dedicated server. This greatly improved page loading speeds and overall stability of the site itself.

Thanks to newer technologies, the portal could now be customized by members in order to display only the news that was interesting to them. The page was now loaded through AJAX, so that news items could be changed without having to reload the entire page.

===Updating yet again===
The site started growing more popular, and more visitors were lured to the website. In the mean time, progress was made on the hacking of various consoles, gaining the site the interest of many users.

GBAtemp got it's second major update on 27 February 2007<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/we-love-gbatemp-v3.45463/ We Love GBAtemp V3!]</ref>. This new site was now called GBAtemp V3, and brought another set of great additions and improvements. A new skin was introduced under the same name, containing a brand new layout and an improved mascot design. The older skins remained available for the members who wished to keep using them. The forums were updated to IPB version 2.3.5, the latest release at the time.

Along with the update to the forums, the site introduced its own wiki, called [[WikiTemp]]. The wiki was meant to be used for articles about GBAtemp itself, but also about its various related subjects, like Nintendo DS flashcarts and console homebrew. Various other changes were also made on the site, like an improved G-Online, which now included integration with the portal.

FileTrip was a big improvement over the old GBAtemp download center. Not only did it have a better and cleaner layout, it also gave users more control over their files. All old files from the GBAtemp download center (a little over 7000) were imported to the new website. Members who had already uploaded files to the old download center could regain access to their files by linking their GBAtemp account to FileTrip.

A few months later, the Network was further expanded through the addition of [[ShopTemp.com]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-presents-shoptemp.219371/ GBAtemp presents: ShopTemp]</ref>. To the surprise of most GBAtemp members, this online store was not a replacement for the GBAtemp merch, but an entirely new website. ===The update that couldn't be===
On 8 October 2011, the next big step forward was made on the main site<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/welcome-to-gbatemp-v3.310728/ Welcome to GBAtemp V3+]</ref>. The forums were updated to the latest Invision Power Board version 3.2, making it the biggest update so far. Due to this, more features than ever before could be found on the site. All of the old modules and addons for the site were completely rewritten to support the new forum software. Some of the more basic features were instead replaced with official Invision Power Board addons, like the blogs and pictures modules. Since the main skin of the site was not a brand new skin, but rather a reworked version of the V3 skin; the update was dubbed as "V3+".

Shortly after the update was launched, a second server was added to support the new increased load of the software, as well as the ever larger growing traffic. By this time, the site had several thousands of users online at all time.

===Unhappy anniversary===
On October 22, 2012, which marked the 10th anniversary of the site, the main GBAtemp website was taken down by an unknown hacker group, which had managed to gain control of the site's backend server. As a result of this hack, the drastic decision was made to get rid of all the current code, and to rebuild the entire code base of the site from the ground up. This meant that the site remained down for a whole week, while the administrators converted the site to a new forum software: XenForo. The site was relaunched as V4 on October 29, 2012<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-v4-powered-by-xenforo.336512/ GBAtemp v4: powered by XenForo]</ref>, with a lot of its previous features missing, but also some new features that were provided by various addons of XenForo.

The staff kept working on the site in the background; and after a while the old review center<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-review-center-is-back.352554/ GBAtemp Review Center is back]</ref> and blogs<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/entry/new-blogs.10059/ New Blogs]</ref> were ported over to the new platform. Since the launch of the new review center, which got a silent update a few months after its launch, the site has tried to evolve in a more legitimate and reputable site for gaming news and reviews. The staff has made various connections to game publishers and producers to acquire review codes for games and gaming accessories. News articles that are posted to the new home page have also received an improved, more professional layout. Another improvement was the Reviews section, which would later turn out to be one of the biggest features of the site. Regular members were also allowed to post their reviews in a special section. The best reviews were regularly featured on the site's front page.

On 11 June 2006, a new skin called ''GBAtemp Lite'' was added to the site<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatempnet-changes.33210/ GBAtemp.net Changes]</ref>. The site also moved to a new and better host, resulting for the first time in a dedicated server. This greatly improved page loading speeds and overall stability of the site itself.

A few months later, on November 2006, the portal received another update<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/new-portal-on-gbatemp.39403/ New Portal on GBAtemp]</ref>. Thanks to newer technologies, the portal could now be customized by members in order to display only the news that was interesting to them. The page was now loaded through AJAX, so that news items could be changed without having to reload the entire page.

Over time, the site began running slower, resulting in a big part of the older posts and topics to be archived<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/misc-gbatemp-news.43663/ Misc GBAtemp News]</ref>. This archiving would later be undone, making all posts available from the main site once again.

===Updating yet again===
The site started growing more popular, and more visitors were lured to the website. In the mean time, progress was made on the hacking of various consoles, gaining the site the interest of many users.

GBAtemp got it's second major update on 27 February 2007<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/we-love-gbatemp-v3.45463/ We Love GBAtemp V3!]</ref>. This new site was now called GBAtemp V3, and brought another set of great additions and improvements. A new skin was introduced under the same name, containing a brand new layout and an improved mascot design. The older skins remained available for the members who wished to keep using them. The forums were updated to IPB version 2.3.5, the latest release at the time.

Along with the update to the forums, the site introduced its own wiki, called [[WikiTemp]]. The wiki was meant to be used for articles about GBAtemp itself, but also about its various related subjects, like Nintendo DS flashcarts and console homebrew. Various other changes were also made on the site, like an improved G-Online, which now included integration with the portal.

Only a few days after the update, the site moved to yet another webhost<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/if-you-can-read-this-then.45628/ If you can read this, then...]</ref>. At this time the site contained around 500 active members on average.

The site had now reached 5 years of existence, and had gained over 100,000 members and nearly 850,000 posts<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-forums-5th-anniversary.63443/ GBAtemp forums 5th anniversary]</ref>. But the site kept on growing faster than ever before!

===Expanding the network===
On 20 October 2009, GBAtemp launched a new sister site under the name [[FileTrip.net]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-network-launches-new-website-filetrip.186682/ GBAtemp Network launches new website FileTrip.net]</ref>. This resulted in the creation of the GBAtemp Network.

FileTrip was a big improvement over the old GBAtemp download center. Not only did it have a better and cleaner layout, it also gave users more control over their files. All old files from the GBAtemp download center (a little over 7000) were imported to the new website. Members who had already uploaded files to the old download center could regain access to their files by linking their GBAtemp account to FileTrip.

A few months later, the Network was further expanded through the addition of [[ShopTemp.com]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-presents-shoptemp.219371/ GBAtemp presents: ShopTemp]</ref>. To the surprise of most GBAtemp members, this online store was not a replacement for the GBAtemp merch, but an entirely new website. The site sold mostly homebrew related products, including NDS Flashcarts and Wii Modchips. The store quickly became known for it's incredibly low prices.

On 30 October 2010, a new feature was added to the main site called [[Ask GBAtemp!]]<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/ask-gbatemp.262637/ Ask GBAtemp!]</ref>. The feature allowed members to ask and answer questions in a more simplified Q&A format, without distractions from all of the forums extended features. While this is technically not a separate site of the network, it was considered one of the bigger features that were available.

In December 2010, bad luck had fallen upon the GBAtemp Network. ShopTemp.com grew too popular for it's own good, and was eventually ordered to stop selling NDS Flashcarts and Modchips. Due to this being the most popular items in the shop, the site was shut down entirely<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/shoptemp-v1-rip.268719/ ShopTemp (V1) R.I.P.]</ref>.

A few months later, it was revealed that ShopTemp was far from gone. The site was relaunched on 8 February 2011 under a new name (ShopTemp.net), and with a different goal<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-presents-shoptempnet.278327/ GBAtemp presents ShopTemp.net]</ref>. Unlike the last version of the site, ShopTemp was no longer selling actual items by itself. Instead, the site was used as a price comparator for other webshops. ===The update that couldn't be===
On 8 October 2011, the next big step forward was made on the main site<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/welcome-to-gbatemp-v3.310728/ Welcome to GBAtemp V3+]</ref>. The forums were updated to the latest Invision Power Board version 3.2, making it the biggest update so far. Due to this, more features than ever before could be found on the site. All of the old modules and addons for the site were completely rewritten to support the new forum software. Some of the more basic features were instead replaced with official Invision Power Board addons, like the blogs and pictures modules. Since the main skin of the site was not a brand new skin, but rather a reworked version of the V3 skin; the update was dubbed as "V3+".

Shortly after the update was launched, a second server was added to support the new increased load of the software, as well as the ever larger growing traffic. By this time, the site had several thousands of users online at all time.

===Unhappy anniversary===
On October 22, 2012, which marked the 10th anniversary of the site, the main GBAtemp website was taken down by an unknown hacker group, which had managed to gain control of the site's backend server. As a result of this hack, the drastic decision was made to get rid of all the current code, and to rebuild the entire code base of the site from the ground up. This meant that the site remained down for a whole week, while the administrators converted the site to a new forum software: XenForo. The site was relaunched as V4 on October 29, 2012<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-v4-powered-by-xenforo.336512/ GBAtemp v4: powered by XenForo]</ref>, with a lot of its previous features missing, but also some new features that were provided by various addons of XenForo.

The staff kept working on the site in the background; and after a while the old review center<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-review-center-is-back.352554/ GBAtemp Review Center is back]</ref> and blogs<ref>[https://gbatemp.net/entry/new-blogs.10059/ New Blogs]</ref> were ported over to the new platform. Some other new features were also added, such as thread access lists; which allow multiple members to edit the first post of a thread. The former release list (G-Online) was instead replaced by a partner site, NFOrush (which has since stopped).

Since the launch of the new review center, which got a silent update a few months after its launch, the site has tried to evolve in a more legitimate and reputable site for gaming news and reviews. The staff has made various connections to game publishers and producers to acquire review codes for games and gaming accessories. News articles that are posted to the new home page have also received an improved, more professional layout. ==History==
Like many people, I stumbled on the site while trying to find out more about how to softmod his Nintendo Wii Console. Using one of the guides on the site, I eventually managed to perform the then difficult steps, like downgrading, patching various system titles, etc. I kept browsing the forums out of interest, and eventually got to know enough about the "scene" that I decided I should help other people out too. So on January 7th, 2009, I registered my account.

I remained active on the site by helping out other members, and by improving documentation of various hacking methods. After the "USB Loader era" of Wii hacking began, I could often be found in the [http://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx.149922/ USB Loader GX thread], answering questions. After a while, I also decided to rewrite the "[http://gbatemp.net/posts/2130228 Readmii]", which essentially became the first guide I wrote for Wii hacking.

After spending a good amount of time on the Wii hacking forums, many people started writing their own guides on how to softmod a Wii. I noticed however that none of these guides really explained what exactly their steps were truly doing. This led to people blindly following guides, often doing steps that were both unneeded and dangerous. As a result, I decided to create a guide by myself. This guide became to be known as the [https://sites.google.com/site/completesg Complete Softmod Guide], since I wanted it to be "complete" with information of ''what'' the steps were doing. The initial version of the guide was a simple Google Docs document, inspired by the GX Readmii, but it later switched to Google Sites; and was expanded greatly.

Due to my activity and helpful posts in the Wii section I was eventually approached on IRC by [[Ace Gunman]], one of the former site Admins, asking if I would be interested in a Moderator position on the site. Though I was not entirely sure I could handle being a moderator on such a large site, I decided to accept the position because the Wii section could definitely use more active moderators. The promotion [http://gbatemp.net/threads/staff-changes.224323/ went through] on May 2nd, 2010, a little over a year after I joined the site.

After becoming a staff member, my posting speed decreased grealty, as I had to focus more on moderating the Wii section. Due to the large amount of activity in this section at the time, this was definitely not an easy task! I can remember various occasions on which I got angry PMs about members disagreeing with my decisions. I guess this is to be expected when moderating a large forum. I remained active as a staffer and was eventually [https://gbatemp.net/threads/forum-staff-changes.280182/ promoted again] in February 2011. To my surprise, I skipped the Global Moderator rank entirely and went straight to Supervisor; where I've been ever since.

In time my role as a staff member started to greatly change. The Wii section started to become somewhat less active, and there were enough new Moderators to handle it. Since I am a programmer, and Narin, the previous main developer of the site left, I was asked by Costello to help maintain the underlying code of the site. Over the years I have helped program site features and even got us to update the site to a newer IPB version. Unfortunatly, a while after, on the site's 10th anniversary, we were hacked, and the site had to be taken down. As a result, we made the heavy decision of abandoning the entire codebase based on IPB and purchased a XenForo license. Since then, I've basically become the main technical maintainer of the site. These days, my role is mostly to fix site bugs in the code, and to develop most of our custom site features.

==Wiki Contributions==
My edits started out very simple, with creating this page (though still way less detailed than it is now). I got more interested in the MediaWiki software by editing this wiki, and became fairly good with the syntax.

I kept making more edits on the wiki, and was eventually made a Sysop by Costello because I was active, and the wiki needed one. This happened before I became a staff member on the actual forums. At the moment, I'm still the only active Sysop, thus probably the best person to contact for Wiki problems.

I made use of the Sysop rights to update some of the older protected pages, and to delete most of the other old pages. I keep track of everything I do in my [[User:Tj cool/Wiki Updates|Wiki Updates]] page.

The Administrators are the owners of GBAtemp, its servers, and everything else related to it. They decide the general direction of the site, and as such, make the biggest decisions of all staff. The Administrators also perform the technical maintenance of the site, like managing the server infrastructure, programming new features and site skins, fixing bugs, and more. They also manage everything related to funding, Patreon and sponsorships.

The Chief Editor is the leader of the Magazine Staff branch of the staff. They are in charge of all editorial content, such as front page news posts and reviews. The moderating staff is responsible for keeping the forums clean of spam and to serve as arbiters in the various discussions on the forums. They are granted additional tools over other members that allow them to effectively perform this job. Some of their abilities include editing any user's post, deleting posts that have no value, turning threads into "sticky threads" to keep them on top, and more. They also have access to advanced analytical tools that allow them to judge where to prioritize their attention. ==History==
===Early years===
[[File:Gbatemp2ya.png|thumb|The initial look of GBAtemp]]'''GBAtemp''' began as a small GBA ROM site in 2002, created by it's original admin, an Italian guy named KiVan.

KiVan was a GBA scene freak, always behind the latest ROM releases. He was both for playing them (first on emulator, then came the 'real hardware', aka flash carts) and for sharing them with others.

Motivated by his passion for the GBA games and by the relative difficulty of getting the ROMs on IRC channels soon after the release, he came up with the idea to host some of the latest ROMs himself, to help out close and far friends that shared his same passion: the GBA. So he started to keep a constantly up-to-date web page, where he provided always-working links to the LATEST 10 GBA ROMs. A very simple and straightforward page: just some text & images, and links to the ROMs of course .

He started to become well-known in the scene because he was blazingly fast in updating the web page (split-seconds after the ROM was released, KiVan uploaded it on the hosting web space and updated the page with the links), and he almost never had any broken links (well he had them, but he worked VERY VERY hard to update old dead links with new links as soon as he noticed them down... and that was REAL fast since he was a real 'F5' refresh maniac).

That page was called GBAtemp, mostly because it was a GBA ROMs page, but always TEMP(orary), since KiVan had to switch hosting nearly everyday, and KiVan worked hard for it: by updating every hour or less the page with the newest ROMs & by always keeping the web page & the ROMs online, using a free dynamic DNS service in order to automatically give people the link to the latest, constantly changing, working web space.

Back at the time, people knew that if you wanted to check the last ROM released or if you needed a hand to get just released GBA ROM, GBAtemp was the place to be.

Keeping up with the ever flowing releases and the web hosting shutdowns was no easy feat, but KiVan was well prepared for the task. He had tons of different 'free' webspaces registered to always different fake names: he kept registering new spaces every day with fake names and IDs, and he kept this 'pool' of free hosting web spaces so as soon as the web page or one of the ROMs went down (mostly because the hosting company finally noticed KiVan playing bad tricks with THEIR web space), he could easily and quickly replace the link with a new one.

KiVan was at the time, a university student in computer science at the 'Università degli Studi di Milano' in Milan (Italy), and from the university computers room he administered GBAtemp and played every single GBA release as soon as they came out along with several friends: Omero, Alexander, Zel and Garet. They all had GBAs and flash cards and so non-stop multiplayer and single player 10 hours per day was pretty much the 'usual everyday stuff' for them.

Then things started to change: the GBAtemp name spread quickly, and two of KiVan's close friends (Omero and Alexander) joined him to help out with GBAtemp, and so they started to add 'features' to that tiny page: first a guest book (it sucked big time, but it was used as a sort of make-shift message/relay board), then the chance for users to give feedback to the ROMs, then some news, etc...

At some time, they came up with the idea of making it a forum, a community. Here came M4D (an Italian gaming services portal), which helped a lot by providing GBAtemp a server to be for quite a long time, giving bandwidth & server all for free. This was the chance for the guys to make GBAtemp into something big for real.

On 24 October 2002, the Invision Power Board forums and portal were officially opened, hosted by M4D server. [[Omero]] and [[Alexander]] helped [[KiVan]] installed and managed the board. The site boasted an impressive portal, it was an original design and quite different from normal IPB portals, this led to many other sites cloning the portal layout. Despite the Italian origins, English was picked as the language of choice, because KiVan, Omero and Alexander wanted GBAtemp to be the #1 GBA Scene Community on the web, and English is by far the most widespread and well-known language, so it was the only 'right' choice for that, simple enough. Also because of this, the forums quickly grew in size and the new GBAtemp attracted a lot of attention.

About half a year into the forums life, the staff had to come to the decision that ROMs would no longer be available to download from GBAtemp, and all warez and other illegal material would be ruled out on the forum. The reason this was done is because a lot of members and the staff themselves had really come to appreciate the forums and each other, and didn't want to risk losing the community they had built up. So to avoid legal issues and to make sure GBAtemp was never shut down, all ROMs, ROM links, warez and more were now strictly forbidden on the 'new GBAtemp'.

===A major site change===
[[File:Gbatempv2.png|thumb|A new look for the site]]On 14 January 2005, the forums and website got their first major update<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/23670-welcome-to-gbatemp-v2/ Welcome to GBAtemp V2!]</ref>. Officially dubbed GBAtemp V2, the site was improved in many ways. The site officially started using http://gbatemp.net as it's new web domain from this date.

The most notable change was the upgrade of the forums. Thanks to donations from the various staff members, enough money was raised to buy an Invision Power Board License, which was used to install IPB2.0.2, and later 2.0.3. Along with the new forum came a brand new skin, as well as a revamped portal. Other changes include the addition of new forums, the creation of the gOnline, and the changes to the Staff.

Another improvement was the Reviews section, which would later turn out to be one of the biggest features of the site. Regular members were also allowed to post their reviews in a special section. The best reviews were regularly featured on the site's front page.

On 11 June 2006, a new skin called ''GBAtemp Lite'' was added to the site<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/33210-gbatempnet-changes/ GBAtemp.net Changes]</ref>. The site also moved to a new and better host, resulting for the first time in a dedicated server. This greatly improved page loading speeds and overall stability of the site itself.

A few months later, on November 2006, the portal received another update<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/39403-new-portal-on-gbatemp/ New Portal on GBAtemp]</ref>. Thanks to newer technologies, the portal could now be customized by members in order to display only the news that was interesting to them. The page was now loaded through AJAX, so that news items could be changed without having to reload the entire page.

Over time, the site began running slower, resulting in a big part of the older posts and topics to be archived<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/43663-misc-gbatemp-news/ Misc GBAtemp News]</ref>.

===Updating yet again===
The site started growing more popular, and more visitors were lured to the website. In the mean time, progress was made on various consoles, gaining the site the interest of many users.

GBAtemp got it's second major update on 27 February 2007<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/45463-we-love-gbatemp-v3/ We Love GBAtemp V3!]</ref>. This new site was now called GBAtemp V3, and brought another set of great additions and improvements. A new skin was introduced under the same name, containing a brand new layout and an improved mascot design. The older skins remained available for the members who wished to keep using them. The forums were updated to IPB version 2.3.5, the latest release at the time.

Along with the update, the GBAtemp Wiki, nicknamed WikiTemp, was introduced. The wiki was meant to be used for articles about GBAtemp itself, but also about it's various related subjects, like Nintendo DS flashcarts and console homebrew. Various other changes were also made on the site, like an improved gOnline, which now included integration with the portal.

Only a few days after the major update, the site moved to yet another webhost<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/45628-if-you-can-read-this-then/ If you can read this, then...]</ref>. At this time the site contained around 500 active members on average.

This allowed the members of the site to upload various homebrew and other useful tools directly to the site. The feature turned out to be a big success, as it gained over 500 files in only a few days<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/51541-500-files-in-the-download-center/ 500 Files in the GBAtemp download center]</ref>.

Various other projects were started, including a podcast (named Tempcast)<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/61367-tempcast-the-gbatemp-podcast/ Tempcast - The GBAtemp Podcast]</ref>, a real Releases Management Center<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/63507-gbatemp-releases-management-center/ GBAtemp Releases Management Center]</ref>, and an online web store for GBAtemp related merchandise<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/63552-gbatemp-the-official-shop/ GBAtemp: the official shop]</ref>.

The site had now reached 5 years of existence, and had gained over 100,000 members and nearly 850,000 posts<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/63443-gbatemp-forums-5th-anniversary/ GBAtemp forums 5th anniversary]</ref>. But the site kept on growing faster than ever before!

===Expanding the network===
On 20 October 2009, GBAtemp launched a new sister site under the name [[FileTrip.net]]<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/186682-gbatemp-network-launches-new-website-filetrip/ GBAtemp Network launches new website FileTrip.net]</ref>. This resulted in the creation of the GBAtemp Network.

FileTrip was an enormous improvement over the old GBAtemp download system. Not only did it have a better and cleaner layout, it also gave users more control over their files. All old files from the GBAtemp download center (a little over 7000) were imported to the new website. Members who had already uploaded files to the old download center could regain access to their files by linking their GBAtemp account to FileTrip.

A few months later, the Network was further expanded through the addition of [[ShopTemp.com]]<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/219371-gbatemp-presents-shoptemp/ GBAtemp presents: ShopTemp]</ref>. To the surprise of most GBAtemp members, this online store was not a replacement for the GBAtemp merch, but an entirely new website. The site sold mostly homebrew related products, including NDS Flashcarts and Wii Modchips. The store quickly became known for it's incredibly low prices.

On 30 October 2010, a new feature was added to the main site called [[Ask GBAtemp!]]<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/262637-ask-gbatemp/ Ask GBAtemp!]</ref>. While this is technically not a separate site of the network, it was considered one of the bigger features that were available.

In December 2010, bad luck had fallen upon the GBAtemp Network. ShopTemp.com grew too popular for it's own good, and was eventually ordered to stop selling NDS Flashcarts and Modchips. Due to this being the most popular items in the shop, the site was shut down entirely<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/268719-shoptemp-v1-rip/ ShopTemp (V1) R.I.P.]</ref>.

A few months later, it was revealed that ShopTemp was far from gone. The site was relaunched on 8 February 2011 under a new name (ShopTemp.net), and with a different goal<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/278327-gbatemp-presents-shoptempnet/ GBAtemp presents ShopTemp.net]</ref>. Unlike the last version of the site, ShopTemp was no longer selling actual items by itself. Instead, the site was used as a price comparator for other webshops. The new website would be integrated with GBAtemp.net (sharing the same user database), allowing GBAtemp members to sell their items on ShopTemp.

===The long awaited update===
On 8 October 2011, the next big step forward was made on the main site<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/310728-welcome-to-gbatemp-v3/ Welcome to GBAtemp V3+]</ref>. After a long wait, the forums were finally updated yet again, bringing it to GBAtemp V3+. Unlike previous iterations of the site, no new skin was added, but instead a newer version of the GBAtemp V3 skin was applied. This earned it the name V3+.

The biggest change on the site was the update to Invision Power Board version 3.2. Due to this, more features than ever before could be found on the site. All of the modules and addons for the site were completely rewritten to support the new site. Some of the features were instead replaced with official Invision Power Board addons, like the blogs and pictures modules.

===Early years===

KiVan was a GBA scene freak, always behind the latest ROM releases. He was both for playing them (first on emulator, then came the 'real hardware', aka flash carts) and for sharing them with others.

Motivated by his passion for the GBA games and by the relative difficulty of getting the ROMs on IRC channels soon after the release, he came up with the idea to host some of the latest ROMs himself, to help out close and far friends that shared his same passion: the GBA. So he started to keep a constantly up-to-date web page, where he provided always-working links to the LATEST 10 GBA ROMs. A very simple and straightforward page: just some text & images, and links to the ROMs of course .

He started to become well-known in the scene because he was blazingly fast in updating the web page (split-seconds after the ROM was released, KiVan uploaded it on the hosting web space and updated the page with the links), and he almost never had any broken links (well he had them, but he worked VERY VERY hard to update old dead links with new links as soon as he noticed them down... and that was REAL fast since he was a real 'F5' refresh maniac).

That page was called GBAtemp, mostly because it was a GBA ROMs page, but always TEMP(orary), since KiVan had to switch hosting nearly everyday, and KiVan worked hard for it: by updating every hour or less the page with the newest ROMs & by always keeping the web page & the ROMs online, using a free dynamic DNS service in order to automatically give people the link to the latest, constantly changing, working web space.

Back at the time, people knew that if you wanted to check the last ROM released or if you needed a hand to get just released GBA ROM, GBAtemp was the place to be.

Keeping up with the ever flowing releases and the web hosting shutdowns was no easy feat, but KiVan was well prepared for the task. He had tons of different 'free' webspaces registered to always different fake names: he kept registering new spaces every day with fake names and IDs, and he kept this 'pool' of free hosting web spaces so as soon as the web page or one of the ROMs went down (mostly because the hosting company finally noticed KiVan playing bad tricks with THEIR web space), he could easily and quickly replace the link with a new one.

KiVan was at the time, a university student in computer science at the 'Università degli Studi di Milano' in Milan (Italy), and from the university computers room he administered GBAtemp and played every single GBA release as soon as they came out along with several friends: Omero, Alexander, Zel and Garet. They all had GBAs and flash cards and so non-stop multiplayer and single player 10 hours per day was pretty much the 'usual everyday stuff' for them.

Then things started to change: the GBAtemp name spread quickly, and two of KiVan's close friends (Omero and Alexander) joined him to help out with GBAtemp, and so they started to add 'features' to that tiny page: first a guest book (it sucked big time, but it was used as a sort of make-shift message/relay board), then the chance for users to give feedback to the ROMs, then some news, etc...

At some time, they came up with the idea of making it a forum, a community. Here came M4D (an Italian gaming services portal), which helped a lot by providing GBAtemp a server to be for quite a long time, giving bandwidth & server all for free. This was the chance for the guys to make GBAtemp into something big for real.

On 24 October 2002, the Invision Power Board forums and portal were officially opened, hosted by M4D server. [[Omero]] and [[Alexander]] helped [[KiVan]] installed and managed the board. The site boasted an impressive portal, it was an original design and quite different from normal IPB portals, this led to many other sites cloning the portal layout. Despite the Italian origins, English was picked as the language of choice, because KiVan, Omero and Alexander wanted GBAtemp to be the #1 GBA Scene Community on the web, and English is by far the most widespread and well-known language, so it was the only 'right' choice for that, simple enough. Also because of this, the forums quickly grew in size and the new GBAtemp attracted a lot of attention.

About half a year into the forums life, the staff had to come to the decision that ROMs would no longer be available to download from GBAtemp, and all warez and other illegal material would be ruled out on the forum. The reason this was done is because a lot of members and the staff themselves had really come to appreciate the forums and each other, and didn't want to risk losing the community they had built up. So to avoid legal issues and to make sure GBAtemp was never shut down, all ROMs, ROM links, warez and more were now strictly forbidden on the 'new GBAtemp'.

===A major site change===

Officially dubbed GBAtemp V2, the site was improved in many ways. The site officially started using http://gbatemp.net as it's new web domain from this date.

The most notable change was the upgrade of the forums. Thanks to donations from the various staff members, enough money was raised to buy an Invision Power Board License, which was used to install IPB2.0.2, and later 2.0.3. Along with the new forum came a brand new skin, as well as a revamped portal. Other changes include the addition of new forums, the creation of the gOnline, and the changes to the Staff.

Another improvement was the Reviews section, which would later turn out to be one of the biggest features of the site. Regular members were also allowed to post their reviews in a special section. The best reviews were regularly featured on the site's front page.

On 11 June 2006, a new skin called ''GBAtemp Lite'' was added to the site<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/33210-gbatempnet-changes/ GBAtemp.net Changes]</ref>. The site also moved to a new and better host, resulting for the first time in a dedicated server. This greatly improved page loading speeds and overall stability of the site itself.

A few months later, on November 2006, the portal received another update<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/39403-new-portal-on-gbatemp/ New Portal on GBAtemp]</ref>. Thanks to newer technologies, the portal could now be customized by members in order to display only the news that was interesting to them. The page was now loaded through AJAX, so that news items could be changed without having to reload the entire page.

===Updating yet again===
The site started growing more popular, and more visitors were lured to the website. In the mean time, progress was made on various consoles, gaining the site the interest of many users.

GBAtemp got it's second major update on 27 February 2007<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/45463-we-love-gbatemp-v3/ We Love GBAtemp V3!]</ref>. This new site was now called GBAtemp V3, and brought another set of great additions and improvements. A new skin was introduced under the same name, containing a brand new layout and an improved mascot design. The older skins remained available for the members who wished to keep using them. The forums were updated to IPB version 2.3.5, the latest release at the time.

Along with the update, the GBAtemp Wiki, nicknamed WikiTemp, was introduced. The wiki was meant to be used for articles about GBAtemp itself, but also about it's various related subjects, like Nintendo DS flashcarts and console homebrew. Various other changes were also made on the site, like an improved gOnline, which now included integration with the portal.

Only a few days after the major update, the site moved to yet another webhost<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/45628-if-you-can-read-this-then/ If you can read this, then...]</ref>. At this time the site contained around 500 active members on average.

===Expanding the network===
On 20 October 2009, GBAtemp launched a new sister site under the name [[FileTrip.net]]<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/186682-gbatemp-network-launches-new-website-filetrip/ GBAtemp Network launches new website FileTrip.net]</ref>. This resulted in the creation of the GBAtemp Network.

FileTrip was an enormous improvement over the old GBAtemp download system. Not only did it have a better and cleaner layout, it also gave users more control over their files. All old files from the GBAtemp download center (a little over 7000) were imported to the new website. Members who had already uploaded files to the old download center could regain access to their files by linking their GBAtemp account to FileTrip.

A few months later, the Network was further expanded through the addition of [[ShopTemp.com]]<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/219371-gbatemp-presents-shoptemp/ GBAtemp presents: ShopTemp]</ref>. To the surprise of most GBAtemp members, this online store was not a replacement for the GBAtemp merch, but an entirely new website. The site sold mostly homebrew related products, including NDS Flashcarts and Wii Modchips. The store quickly became known for it's incredibly low prices.

On 30 October 2010, a new feature was added to the main site called [[Ask GBAtemp!]]<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/262637-ask-gbatemp/ Ask GBAtemp!]</ref>. While this is technically not a separate site of the network, it was considered one of the bigger features that were available.

In December 2010, bad luck had fallen upon the GBAtemp Network. ShopTemp.com grew too popular for it's own good, and was eventually ordered to stop selling NDS Flashcarts and Modchips. Due to this being the most popular items in the shop, the site was shut down entirely<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/268719-shoptemp-v1-rip/ ShopTemp (V1) R.I.P.]</ref>.

A few months later, it was revealed that ShopTemp was far from gone. ===The long awaited update===
On 8 October 2011, the next big step forward was made on the main site<ref>[http://gbatemp.net/topic/310728-welcome-to-gbatemp-v3/ Welcome to GBAtemp V3+]</ref>. After a long wait, the forums were finally updated yet again, bringing it to GBAtemp V3+. Unlike previous iterations of the site, no new skin was added, but instead a newer version of the GBAtemp V3 skin was applied. This earned it the name V3+.

The biggest change on the site was the update to Invision Power Board version 3.2. Due to this, more features than ever before could be found on the site. All of the modules and addons for the site were completely rewritten to support the new site. Some of the features were instead replaced with official Invision Power Board addons, like the blogs and pictures modules.

These are the various groups you may find on the Forums. Some groups (Admins, Moderators and Magazine Staff) are "stacked" upon eachother, meaning that the higher group has all of the abilities the lower group has.

Administrators are groups that have access to the Administration Control Panel. From this panel, they can manage most of the site's configurations. These groups are mainly responsible for making big site-wide decisions and maintaining the site in general.

The Administrators are the owners of GBAtemp (and the other GBAtemp network sites), its servers, and everything else related to it. They make the biggest decisions and do technical work (server administration, domain management, design, coding...).

As the name implies, the members of the Supervisors group will supervise the other staff members (except Administrators). They have limited access to the AdminCP, and mostly perform simple administrative tasks, like changing usernames, banning users, etc. They also act as Global Moderators on the forums. If a user has a problem with another staff member, they should contact a supervisor.

===Moderators===
Moderators are special users who have been granted additional power on the GBAtemp forums in order to clean up spam and to moderate discussion. They have to ability to edit and remove all posts in the subforums they are assigned to. They can also move, merge or split topics and promote the "best" topics to stickies. Besides that, they also have access to the Report Center, where all reports made by members go.

Global Moderators are able to use moderating abilities on all subforums (that they can view). They also have some other additional rights over Moderators. Global Moderators are generally more experienced than normal Moderators, and help them out if needed.

Moderators have limited moderating abilities in the forums assigned to them by an Administrator. People who are new to the staff will initially be placed in this group so they can learn how to use their new abilities. After a while, they will be evaluated by the senior staff and either promoted to Global Moderators, where they have full moderating rights, or demoted back to a regular member.

===Content Staff===
The Content Staff specializes in providing unique content on the web site. They are divided in Reviewers and News Reporters, who both provide their own content independently. All of the content is posted directly to the GBAtemp home page.
While these groups have limited moderating abilities on the forums, this is only to help them with their task. They normally do not moderate the forums.
