USB Devices Compatibility List
Wii USB Devices Compatibility List
Anyone is free to edit this list though you must create an account first. Vandals will be banned and their IP blocked from further edits.
PLEASE READ ME (Guidelines)
1. If you are the first person to add a Device, then the confirmed column should read 0 (as it is unconfirmed). Every person should then add 1 to that when they have verified that outcome.
2. Keep it to English! Most people at GBATemp have decent English, if you can't say something in English, then write it down in whatever language you speak and hopefully someone will translate it for you.
3. Try to fill out as much as you can.
4. Hugely important would be adding a link to the drive and where you bought it. Naming has been a little vague, lets be precise. Drives can differ from batch to batch. If the shop you purchased it from can't be found online, please find the manufacturers web page for that EXACT drive version.
5. If you are running the game using a card reader (SD, Memory Stick, CF, etc), list the READER, NOT THE CARD; USB cardreaders are bridge-like in that any card will work with a working reader. Similarly, if using an enclosure that wasn't sold at retail with your hard drive already in it, list the ENCLOSURE, NOT the drive itself.
How to test
Finding your device's USB ID:
Every USB device ever made has its own unique Vendor ID and Product ID, two four-digit hexadecimal numbers that together identify a particular model made by a particular company. If you have a device's Vendor ID and Product ID you can say with confidence whether any two given USB devices are the same model or not.
Windows: Plug the device into your computer. Wait for Windows to initialize the device, if necessary. Open Device Manager, open the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" group, right click on "USB Mass Storage Device", select the "Details" tab, then select "Hardware Ids" from the Property drop-down box. In the big box beneath that there will be one or more lines starting with something like this:
USB\VEN_05E3&DEV_0715
In this case, the Vendor ID is 05E3 and the Product ID is 0715.
If there is more than one "USB Mass Storage Device" listed, unplug any USB device plugged into the system, or failing that, try a different computer. Some computers have built-in cardreaders attached to the USB bus, which can confuse the process.
For ease of use finding you VendorID and ProductID numbers in Windows, you can download USBDeview at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html and check the corresponding columns at the programs listing.
Linux:
Plug the device into your computer, wait about 8 seconds (to be safe), then:
$ less /proc/bus/usb/devices
For every USB device in your system (including your root hubs!) there is an entry in this pseudo-file that looks something like this: (the Vendor ID and Product ID are in bold)
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=04 Cnt=01 Dev#= 15 Spd=480 MxCh= 0 D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1 P: Vendor=05e3 ProdID=0715 Rev=94.07 S: Manufacturer=Genesys S: Product=USB Reader S: SerialNumber=000000009407 C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=500mA I:* If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms
Note "Driver=usb-storage". This tells you the device is claimed by the usb-storage driver, and is therefore a USB storage device. Obviously, if usb-storage isn't loaded that won't be there; make sure it's loaded!
If there is more than one such block listed, again, unplug other devices from the system, or failing that, try a different computer. Note that you will have to close and re-open the file to see any changes.
Another way to do this in linux:
$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0951:1603 Kingston Technology Data Traveler 1GB/2GB Pen Drive
The first number is Vendor ID and the second Product ID
Mac: Insert the USB device into your Mac. Wait about 8-10 seconds, to make sure it's detected, and start System Profiler. On the left hand column, under the Hardware heading, find USB. On the top right pane, find and click on the device you are checking (check under the names USB Reader, Mass Storage Device, Generic Storage, Volume, etc.), and more information should appear to the bottom of this pane (now the bottom right). In this area, search for the following information:
USB Reader: Capacity: 1.88 GB Removable Media: Yes Detachable Drive: Yes BSD Name: disk3 Product ID: 0x0715 Vendor ID: 0x05e3 (Genesys Logic, Inc.) Version: 94.07 Serial Number: 000000009407 Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
GeeXboX:
1. Check if Device is formated as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS
2. Make a Backup. There's a very small Chance that the Stick will get corrupted.
3. Load GeeXboX
4. Plug your Device in
5. See if it shows directories.
Non-Linux based Homebrew:
1. Grab your USB-Device
2. Check if it's formated as FAT/FAT32, Windows XP doesn't let you format big drives (AFIAK over 40GB) as FAT32, you need to use FAT32Format or a Linux live CD/DVD or a GParted Live CD/DVD.
3. Make a Backup. There's a very small Chance that the Stick will get corrupted.
4. Go to HBC, plug your Device in.
5. Load USB mass storage device tester
USB Loader
1. Create a WBFS, NTFS or FAT32 partition on the device, and load a game that is known to work onto the device.
2. Connect the device before turning your Wii on, to be safe. Enable any relevant "Disk mode", "USB storage mode" etc. beforehand.
3. Boot the game you recorded earlier.
4. Play the game for at least one hour before reporting back. Many devices appear to work at first, but have crippling stability issues.
If Problems occur:
1. Try to plug the Device at the other USB-Port.
2. Try to plug the Device in before entering/in Homebrewchannel. Then load App.
3.Try to plug in the Device and then power on Wii.
If the Device does not work
1. Try to find a spare Device that will show up.
2. Use this to boot the loader.
3. Once you have the "No partition found" screen, switch to the original Device.
4. Press A. Hopefully, the device will show up on the screen to be formatted.
5. If it works, on following loads, you will still need to swap. Instead of formatting every time, press A, then B to go back.
If the Device automatically spins down due to inactivity
Some drives are configured from the factory to automatically spindown after a set number of minutes of inactivity, which could cause issues. Configuration software is usually available to configure such devices to disable this feature.
- For Seagate FreeAgent drives download software here.
- For WesternDigital (WD) drives is the WD-IdleDisable-Tool available.

White 64GB Toshiba Transmemory™ - Model# UHYBS-064GH | Not Tested | Not Tested | Works | Fat32 formatted for use with Wii and Gamecube games with Wii Game Manager for Wii and Discex for Gamecube, both show in CFG and USB Loader GX.
Added info. by a different user Aug.2012 - all games show up in usb gx but I can only ever get 4 games to work, in Wii flow I can only ever see 4 games, even if there are supposed to be 10 games on it, same thing in cfg Usb loader.....any more than 4 games and it will just keep resetting back to wii menu after you select any game transferred to it after the first 4, I have tried many things, fat32, ntfs, wbfs drive, reformatting several times and still it will just not read more than 4 games, I know the games work fine as I just finished loading them, about 15 game onto a western digital my book essentials and they work perfectly, Don't buy this, works fine for pc/windows, but for the wii it has some serious issues, if anyone knows how to fix them please post. New post - this is the same person posting that only 4 games work, after much more testing it seems as though the Wii will only recognize 8 gigs of the 64 gig thumb stick, which is why only 4 games usually work as the 4 games I was using added up to close to 8 gigs, I can use all 64 gigs on windows/pc just fine, the wii itself seems to only want to recognize 8 gigs, PLEASE post if anyone can confirm they can actually get the full 64 gigs to work with the Wii, as for now I would say avoid this thumbdrive until more people can confirm. Hi. Im from Chile and I tested the Toshiba USB 64 gb. I have the same problem with the recognition. The wii recognizes only 8 gb and when I have more than 8 gb, the wii resets and return to the main menu. I don´t have a solution for this. |

Maxtor One Toutch 3,5" 300GB | Works | Not Tested | Issues | The USB-Drive works good under Vista, games can be put onto the harddrive using WBFS without problems about 152 games fit on the drive, however USB-Loader v1.1 does not recognize the USB-Drive (tryed as NTFS and as Fat32), after testing i found out that if i open the USB-Drive casing, take the harddrive out and then connect the hardrive to the wii using a simple 3rd party IDE-to-USB converter USB-Loader v1.1 does recognize the USB-Drive and games are selectable and playable. I guess the USB-Loader v1.1 is not compatible with the chipset of Maxtors IDE-to-USB converter. Follow the link for a picture of the Maxtor working with a 3rd party IDE-to-USB converter, [digital8] http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2666/dsc03243b.jpg. EDIT1.: Homebrew does work on the Maxtor One Toutch, no need for the 3rd party IDE-2-USB converter there. EDIT2.: Tested with USB-Loader v1.1 till v1.5. EDIT3.: With Waninkoko's cIOS38Rev12 the drive does work as long as you first boot the USB Loader (Till the No USB Drive found message) and then power up the USB Drive (Un\Replugging the USB cable has no effect). Everytime you exit from the USB Loader you have to repeat the procedure. | 2

Transferred some files to it and plugged in to my 4.3E PAL Wii. Launched USB Loader GX 2.0 from Homebrew Channel 1.0.8 installed via Letterbomb. Everything I have tried works fine - will update if I have any problems in the future. Update : now upgraded using WADManager 1.7 to USBLoader GX 2.3 on IOS250. I now use a forwarder to launch it rather than running it through the Homebrew Channel or using memory having a seperate channel. Very pleased as games load noticeably faster with this version of USBLoader GX. Update - installed Hermes CiOS 222 as USB devices wanted to use the same USB port as the Hard Drive - in USBLoader GX change options for that game to use CiOS 222 instead of Cios 250 and no problems | 4

Toshiba 500GB USB 2.0/3.0 Canvio Portable Hard Drive | Works | Not Tested | Works | If it doesn't work at first, reformat to NTFS with WBM (32 kb sector size). If it still doesn't work, you're doing it wrong! EDIT: Doesn't Work, all the way at least. I have formatted every possible way, and it only half works with the original formatting (FAT32). It only works when you unplug it, plug it back in before starting usb loader. have tried with all iOS's and Loaders, same results. other formattings of hard drive result in not working at all (NTFS & WBFS). better off with another drive that works 100%. By the way i have tried virtually every tutorial out there including the ones recommending using hermes and waninkokos iOS's but same results occured. | 1

Only way I have managed to get this drive to work is using old r883.. Wont work with Uloader or CFG loader. Comment: No love either with FAT formatted drive and CFG Loader on Hermes cIOS 222 5.1, however FAT formatted drive and CFG Loader on Waninkoko cIOS 249 r20 does work. FAT formatted drive and WiiMC on IOS58 also works. No success with this drive, my first attempt at softmodding however another drive has worked confirming this one doesn't. Don't have any experience in trying other settings to see if there is a way to get it working. |

Every USB Loader tried works instantly. ~~ For me I have to turn the drive on after the wii is turned on before I can use USB loader GX but other than that it works perfectly (so far). 3 Games loaded in under an hour. You also have to make 2 partitions on the drive because the max size for wii is 500GB. - - Also for me works perfect, I made a partition of about 100gb, have to power it up AFTER the wii goes on. Works like a charm! Vistitua Works perfectly for me aswell. Partition 500/500. Doesn't matter what's turned on first, works with all usbloaders I've tested. Enjoy!! SoulSnatcher - I purchased this HDD and it works perfectly with NeoGamma R9, uLoader and USB Loader GX. I didn't have the problem mentioned above about bootup of the HDD. Overall, great HDD. Seagate Expansion 1TB USB Desktop External Hard Drive | 0BC2:3300 | Works | Not Tested | Works | Registered Drive first with Seagate. WBFS Manager on Windows x64 couldn't format (not sure about x86, didn't try with USB Loader), ran Ubuntu LiveCD (x86) and installed Linux WBFS Manager. Formatted to Fat32 first, then WBFS. Once formatted, WBFS Manager on Windows worked for copying games. Works with Configurable USB Loader as a single 1TB partition for installing games. It will turn off when the Wii is off as well, so no need to unplug the power supply. The drive goes into sleep mode after a short while of non-use, causing some emulators to lose save data or crash. Seagate Drive Settings has an option to remove the sleep mode. | 1 |

You will need to edit the sleep/power management settings; the current value is set at 15 minutes. Download the 'FreeAgent Desk Software' from the Seagate link at the top of the page to change these settings. I had to Format as FAT32 with EASEUS Partition Master before it would work. Works well as 1TB. / Works fine even without changing the power saving settings. / Confirmed: you don't need to change any power settings. Format at FAT 32, then WBFS and you're good to go. Drive works great. | 9 |

LinksI'd like to report a Casing (in)compatibility issue. the Casing is a: Sweex 3.5 inch - ST031V2 (http://print.acuista.com/en/ficha/393925/) and I use a WDC 640GB WD64AAKS hdd, formated as WBFS in it. I use GX Loader 2.3 and tried 3.0 With GX Loader 2.3 I have the problem that the drive does not show up in GX. It only does so when I let the drive spin up, then quickly turn it off and on again (literally a flick of the switch on the back of the Sweex casing) before the drive is detected/operates properly. With GX Loader 3.0 I have the problem of the drive not being detected at all. At some point, after many tries I got the drive to show up as a FAT16 drive in GX 3.0, but after that, nothing. So I reverted back to 2.3 and decided it's time for a new and bigger drive! (640 is almost full anyway ;) ) |
